Signs Your AC Unit Needs to Be Serviced

This summer has broken record high temperatures for much of the world. Needless to say, if you have central air conditioning, like all of our Montano Homes do, that A/C unit is working extra hard to keep you comfortable. A unit that has not been well maintained or that is older may really struggle to keep your home cool in extreme heat. There are some tell-tale signs that your A/C unit is struggling and needs to be serviced by a technician, and we would like to share those signs with you today.

Constant Cycling

Can you hear your unit turning off and then turning on with only a few minutes in between? This is a clear sign that your unit is working harder than it should be. If you ignore this, it could lead to your compressor and condenser burning out. Replacing these parts is often almost as expensive as replacing the entire unit, which is why having a technician look before it gets to that point can save you a lot of money.

Loud Noises

Naturally, A/C units produce some noise while functioning, but excessive noise could be a sign of a greater problem. A normal sound for an A/C unit to make is a consistent hum. Potential problem sounds include things like clanging and banging. These noises could point to motors and fans that are not working optimally.

Decreased Airflow

Have you noticed a decrease in the airflow that is coming through your vents? This shouldn’t be brushed off. The source of this issue could stem from a cheap fix, like a leaky duct, or it could signal that you have a more serious problem on your hands. Either way, it is best to call a technician out to have a look.

Strange Smells

For the most part, you shouldn’t smell anything when your A/C unit kicks on. If you smell anything musty coming from your unit, it could be an indicator that there is mold growing in or around it. If you smell burning when your A/C is in use, however, this could indicate a problem with your motor. If you smell burning, you should turn the unit off and not use it until a technician comes out to look at it.

If you notice any of these things regarding your A/C unit, be sure to have a technician come out to diagnose it. Repairs are, more often than not, much cheaper than replacements. And don’t neglect to have your HVAC system serviced and maintained regularly! Routine maintenance will increase the longevity of your system and ensure that you are always comfortable in your home.
