Garage Security Tips
From single family homes, to town homes, to paired homes, one thing that we always build our Montano homes with are garages. Garages are convenient, useful, and a great place to store extra household items. Not to mention the fact that during Colorado winters, it is extremely nice to keep your car in a garage. That being said, a sad reality is that thieves know that garages are great places to keep things as well. Even in the best of neighborhoods, you cannot completely eliminate crime, which is why we want to share some key ways that you can keep your garage as secure as possible.
Always Take Your Garage Door Opener with You
Because it is convenient, many people keep their garage door openers inside the car, either on the visor or in a compartment. The problem with this is that those are the first places thieves are going to look for a garage door opener. So, if a thief gains access to your car, they will easily have access to your home as well. For this reason, try to make it a habit instead of taking your garage door opener with you. Many modern garage door openers are petite enough to carry on a key ring.
Always Lock the Door That Leads to the Garage
It may seem easy and convenient to just walk into your home through your garage without locking that inner door, but this is a recipe for disaster. The door leading from your garage to your house is the last line of defense against burglars. If a burglar has gained entry to your garage, the last thing you want is for them to be able to easily walk into your house as well. For this reason, it is always wise to lock that door when you enter or leave the house for the day.
Never Let Thieves See Into Your Garage
A lot of garages have small windows in order to allow natural light in, which is great! The downside, however, is that thieves can use these windows to peer into your garage and see all the valuable things you have inside. They can also check to see if a car is there to gauge whether or not you are home. Don’t worry, though. You don’t have to give up this natural light. Instead, apply frosted film over your windows. This will obscure the view into your garage while still allowing light to shine through.
