Top Places in Colorado to See Fall Foliage

To help you settle on a place to go, we have put together a list of our favorite areas to view the Autumn colors.

Trail Ridge Road

This truly iconic road winds through Rocky Mountain National Park. If you are in the Denver metro area, this is the perfect getaway since it is not a terribly long distance away. You can spend an entire afternoon driving from Grand Lake to Estes Park and see the roads enveloped in bright yellows, oranges, and reds. And when you are not soaking in the colors, the towns of Grand Lake and Estes Park have plenty of charming activities to enjoy. On top of that, from late September to mid-October your odds of catching sight of elk run much higher.

Independence Pass

If you are looking for golden aspens, you will find them here. This road closes around early November, so this drive is perfect for September and October. There are several interesting ghost towns you can drop in on such as Twin Lakes. Along this road is also the town of Aspen which will leave you spoiled for choice on what to do. And if you are going this way, you simply cannot miss Maroon Bells. This stunning area will take your breath away and Fall is the perfect time to see it.

Last Dollar Road

The Last Dollar Road is not for the faint of heart, but you are sure to be rewarded if you go. The drive zig zags from Ridgway to Telluride and will take you roughly 2-3 hours to complete. One thing to note is that it is rather treacherous in wet conditions, so definitely check the weather for sunny skies before you head out. Along the way you can stop and relax at one of the bountiful hot springs in Ridgway or Ouray. And when you make it to Telluride, be sure to add taking the free gondola to your to-do list. The gondola will offer you unmatched views of all the vivid colors and scenery in the box canyon.
